SOFTIMAGE|XSI v.6.x System Requirements: Linux
Operating system - Officially supported distributions:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4, kernel 2.6.9.
- Fedora Project Core 3, kernel 2.6.9-1.667smp.
- Novell SUSE LINUX 9.3.
- Default GNOME window manager or KDE.
You should also be able to run XSI on other Linux distributions provided that you adhere to the following guidelines:
- Kernel: 2.4.18-3 – 2.6.11
- XFree86, XFree86-libs: 4.2.0, 4.3.0

Window managers:
Metacity, KDE (with klipper disabled), Sawfish (without “follow mouse focus” policy), twm, WindowMaker, Enlightenment
The following components are also required:
- libjpeg
- libncurses
- e2fsprogs
- fam-server or gamin
The following components are required mainly during the installation process:
- sed
- textutils
- grep
- fileutils
- xinetd
- bzip2
- tar
Note: There is no support for running XSI on 64-bit Linux machines. It is recommended that you install the 32-bit version of XSI v.6.x on a supported 32-bit operating system. Softimage does not officially support 32-bit applications running on 64-bit machines. There is support for running the mental ray standalone component on 64-bit Linux machines.
You can run the setups for both the 32-bit version of XSI and the 64bit version of mental ray from the SOFTIMAGE|XSI v.6.x Software DVD or download the appropriate setup from the download section.
Hardware:
- Workstation with AMD K8 of 1GigHz or more.
or
- Workstation with Intel Pentium IV of 1GigHz or more .
Graphics Card:
OpenGL accelerated graphics card. 128 MB RAM or more recommended. Click here for an updated list of supported cards and recommended drivers.
Hardware key (dongle):
Required for Essentials, Advanced, and standalone render nodes. Student and Foundation models do not require a dongle.
- A USB hardware key attached to the USB port of each computer designated as a license server.
or
- A serial hardware key attached to the serial port of each computer designated as a license server. In the case of the Sentinel serial dongle, you may also require a 25 pin-male to 9 pin-female converter (supplied with the dongle).
Privileges:
- To run XSI on Linux, you must be a Normal user (this includes installation and workgroup access to SPDL-based and other older, non-self-installing plug-ins).
- To install and license XSI, you must be a Super user.
License server:
Software Protection Manager (SPM) installed on a computer that is accessible from your workstation.
Available hard-disk space
950 MB for a typical installation. Setup requires additional temporary disk space for your system’s temporary folder when decompressing files during installation.
TCP/IP:
TCP/IP service protocol installed on both client and server computers.
RAM:
1 GB of RAM required minimum.
Display resolution:
1280 × 1024 screen resolution recommended.
Mouse:
Three-button mouse.
Web browser:
A web browser to view any HTML documentation.
Additional Recommendations:
An Internet connection to activate the software with a license
- A DVD drive, if installing the software or browsing the media from the Softimage Software DVD.
- A backup device, such as a DAT, 1/4” tape drive, removable hard disk, or DVD/CD-R/CD-RW drive.
